We took turns reading the Ten Commandments from the Bible today. You can find them in Exodus 20:1-17.
Can you believe that after all of the preparation, smoke, shaking and fire on the mountain, the Israelites were found worshipping idols when Moses got back down off the mountain? Imagine the most annoying person you’ve ever known. I don’t think they could even compare to the annoyance the Israelites were to Moses! Moses got so mad that he smashed the tablets! Afterward, and most likely when he cooled down, he asked God to forgive them. God forgave them, but a lot of people died that day due to disobedience.
We followed this lesson with a clip from Veggie Tales—The Fib from Outer Space where Junior was encouraged to lie about a collector’s plate he broke. The fib got bigger and bigger. God gave us rules so that we can please Him and be an example to the rest of the world.
Next week, the kids will get an extra five bucks for the Children’s Church store if they know the Ten Commandments in order. There’s a really good video to help you remember them, and the pictures they use are on the wall in Children’s Church. It’s called The 10 Commandments – Way of the Master.
Did you see War Room?
All I can say is “W-O-W!!!” If we had a bigger house, we would totally have a War Room! I think my kids would say I have a pretty devoted prayer life, but this movie inspired me to be even more disciplined and intentional about prayer.
Do you pray with your kids? If you want your kids to look to the Father as their source of strength, wisdom, and comfort, you’ll model it. Here are a few tips:
- Let them see you praying.
- When they’re struggling, lead them in prayer.
- When they’re celebrating, lead them in prayer.
Don’t try to answer every question your child has. Instead, teach them to turn to God. Nobody else will bless them and transform them like He will.
Each week, we have an activity for families to do together. Our main objective is to help equip you as you become confident in your role as spiritual leader to your child.
If you ever need support in training your child in the way he/she should go, don’t hesitate to ask us or contact Tonya Lawson, Director of Children’s Ministries, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Learning the Ten Commandments
Supplies: Bible and YouTube
First, read Exodus 20:1-17 where you’ll find the Ten Commandments.
Then, watch the YouTube video called Ten Commandments—Way of the Master. It makes memorizing the Ten Commandments so easy that even an adult can learn them!
Next week, the kids who have the Ten Commandments memorized in order will get an extra five bucks for the Children’s Church store.
If your child brings this back to Children’s Church, they will get an extra ticket in the treasure box.
Our family did this activity together.
