According to the American Bible Society 88% of Americans say their household owns a Bible. That is good news. 82% of Americans consider themselves knowledgeable about the Bible. That number is higher than I would have expected and is really good news. 43% of Americans can name the first five books of the Bible. I guess what Americans say about themselves is better than reality. Half of the people who said they are knowledgeable about the Bible apparently don’t know it very well.
This reminds me of the parable Jesus told about two sons. A father asked the first son to work in the vineyard but he said no. Later he went and worked the vineyard. The father then asked the second son and he said yes, but never went to work. As Jesus asked “which of these two did the will of his father?” (Matthew 21:28-32).
How do we know the Bible? Not by an answer on a survey, but by knowing the Bible! One of our best ministries is AWANA. I can guarantee our children who are in AWANA can name the first five books of the Bible.
The Kick-Off date for AWANA is Sunday,
August 3, at 4:00 p.m.
For children ages 3 yrs old – 6th Grade.
