Emperor Theodore of Ethiopia had held a group of 53 European captives for four years. The prisoners included missionaries and a British consul. Queen Victoria wrote letters pleading for the release of the captives. Theodore refused and held the prisoners in a nine-thousand-foot-high fortress deep in the interior of the country. At last the queen ordered a full-scale military expedition from India to march into Ethiopia. The goal was not to conquer the country and make it a British colony, but to rescue the tiny band of civilians. The invasion force included 32,000 men, heavy artillery, … [Read more...]

Biblical Conflict Resolution

Unfortunately, life is filled with a variety of different kinds of conflicts. Colossians reminds us where we used to live in our sin, but because we have been crucified with Christ, forgiven by His blood, we have been raised with Him to walk differently. We do not have … [Read more...]

Gino Bartali was an amazing man. He won the Tour de France in 1938 then again in 1948. The ten-year span between Tour wins is still a record. Gino almost certainly would have won more Tours but WWII interrupted the Tour de France for several years. During the war Gino risked his life helping Jews by transporting forged documents in the seat post of his bike. In 1948 Italy was on the verge of civil war and Gino’s win united the country and some historians believe it averted war. Later in his life Gino Bartali gave this advice to his son: “If you’re good at a sport, they attach the … [Read more...]
